O'Neil was in high school when she took part in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. The contestant was able to climb into the top 100 because of the judges' enthusiasm for her performance. O'Neil was praised by the judges. She was however a complete loser in both the Top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were stunned by the results and advised the audience to choose contestants similar to Melissa O'Neil, who had the best singing abilities. O'Neil's performances were so good that she was never in the third place again. Her two additional performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil was able to advance to the top two spots in the finals of the competition, Werner said that in the morning, the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
